Q & A

Q. How can we best deliver the story well through the songs?

I believe that it is critical to undergo thorough analysis rather than just blindly singing with a vague feeling of “being the character.” My songs can change by the breath the character breathes when facing an intense situation and the corresponding physical changes. The musical <Man of Ramancha> premiered on Broadway in 1965 and, the Role of Aldonza was mostly played by actors who used classical vocalization skills. However, I thought this technique interfered with the performance of the role that outcries and testifies her poverty-stricken life. Therefore I lowered the tone of Aldonza's numbers overall and added a rough grinding sound to them, creating Kim Sun-young's version of Aldonza. It takes bold determination and courage to express the character's life accurately. (Feel it with both your eyes and ears in the class!)

Q. What kind of mindset should I have when I'm under the weather?

I tend to rely on my mental state. I want to advise you not to forcibly correct your condition but to leave yourself to the flow of the day. For example, remind yourself to focus more on the story today as "Hope." Tell yourself to focus more on the lines, meaning behind the words in the lyrics, etc. Don't try harder to sing better but focus on what you will say and the message. If you go on stage like that, there are moments when you gain strength without realizing it. Then you’re set - just be in the flow.

Q. What is your tip when it comes to working with double- or more casting?

In musicals, sometimes more than one actor is cast for the same role and, they take turns to play the character. Your role may require you to show passionate romantic chemistry or an intense conflict, but your partner may change. My know-how for times like this is to find out the charm that each of my co-actor has. If I can focus on their strengths and uniqueness, I can immerse myself in acting even if I am working with different actors.

Q. What kind of effort do you believe is needed by musical theater actors to continue performing long-term?

I try to focus on the things that are unique to me, like breathing, expressions of my eyes, the nuance of words that only I can express, etc. Please do not get too caught up trying to study the works performed by other actors. Your uniqueness as an actor, such as the image or the atmosphere, requires constant practice and improvements. So you must know yourself.
