[Creator Interview]
Q. What kind of activities do teachers usually do? Please introduce yourself briefly!
A. As the representative director of DELICIOUS DESIGN Co., Ltd., and an executive officer of HUGE Co., Ltd., I am creative direction not only for illustrations, but for food in general. I've been fond of cooking and painting since I was in elementary school, and my goal is to get a job related to cooking in the future, and I've also majored in “cooking/food” in high school and junior college. I originally liked illustrations, so I've been drawing for a long time, but I got a creative job at a restaurant company and learned graphic design and digital illustration by myself from there. Even at the company I represent, I work mainly on food design and illustration.
Q. What led you to start your current activities?
A. I made an illustrated menu at RIGOLETTO's first store, which opened in 2006, and my cooking illustrations gained popularity from there, and it became my job one after another. At the beginning, I used Copic and drew analog on paper, but due to the characteristics of combining it with graphic design, digital illustrations are easier to use, so I switched to digital illustrations around 2012. At first, I drew with Photoshop and a pen tablet, but with the advent of the iPad and Apple Pencil, it has dramatically become a familiar expression, and it is also posted with illustrations on Instagram.
Q. What points did you put the most effort into planning the class?
A. Even when it comes to cooking illustrations, it's not just one tone; since they are digital illustrations, it's easy to add variations of various expressions, so you should be able to draw a variety of illustrations. I value expressions that combine techniques to create many works that cannot be done with analog, and that bring out the warmth of analog even though they are digital.
Q. Please say a few words to the students!
A. First, “drawing is fun!” I want you to feel that. The expressions in digital illustrations are endless! However, it has too many functions, and I think there are many people who, on the contrary, have become a nuisance. I want people to feel the fun of digital illustrations, which are easy to do but can be expressed in a variety of ways. If you have an iPad and pencil, you can draw anywhere and as much as you want with digital illustrations! It provides time to immerse yourself in drawing. When I'm drawing, I'm so immersed in it that I'm in a zone-like state. It's fun and fun, and I want to draw forever! It makes me feel like that. I would like to be able to convey the joy of drawing what I like as it is.
