A Hello, I'm Kim Kyu-sam, a cartoonist who is serializing “Hive,” “Vigilante,” and “Gae Jang Soo” on Naver. Starting with the serialization of “Jungle Go” on Naver in 2006, “Chunrimart” was completed, and now they are serializing “Hive,” “Vigilante,” and “Gae Jang Soo.”
Q What led you to take classes?
A I've been drawing manga for 20 years, but I still don't think I'm a professional in painting. However, when it comes to stories, I think I'm a confident pro. When drawing webtoons, I think there are parts that can clearly help me with how to conceive and direct a story, and I wanted to generously share the know-how I know and actually use through this class.
Q What is the goal of the class?
A If you want to draw a manga with materials that you have in mind or what you have experienced, you can complete a manga through my class, That's my goal for this class. I plan to conduct classes in the order in which I write my manuscript and in the order in which I conceived my work. It would be great if students were able to complete a short story by the end of the class. This is a class for becoming a webtoon writer, but I don't want to tell students to be random cartoonists. However, I want to show you the fun of creating a manga in its own way. Also, if you discover talent in the process and start generating income, I would like to show you how to increase that income. I don't think creation is a pain. Creation was an inseparable pleasure for me. I think the motivation for creativity doesn't matter if it's money, interest, or self-satisfaction. I believe that if I get satisfaction from the act of creation itself, it will be a great joy in life just like I did, and I want to share that fun through classes.
Q What kind of content was included in the class
A First, I tried to include in the class ways to make ideas and materials more realistic and appeal to readers so that they can be curious. Usually, materials that you think are fun are 100% fun materials. However, I think there is a separate way to convey it to readers. It's good to understand grammar that elicits human instinctive attention. Manuscripts are the only way for cartoonists to meet readers. Even if they're talking about the same thing, there's definitely a more fun way to convey it.
A I looked for and covered stories and materials, and also covered the characters and how to create events surrounding them. For a tasty development, you need a supporting character to shine and maintain events. In particular, in order to have the impetus for the drama to progress, the main character's reactionary character must appear, and such a character is called an antagonist (antagonist). It captures the overall process of creating a manuscript where antagonists are deployed to advance the story. I prepared to be able to follow along slowly as I carried out the missions I had prepared.
A I'm a person who thinks that a box office formula exists. Most content follows a fixed box office formula. When I watch a lot of different movies on Netflix, I unknowingly get bored because most of them follow the same box office formula without knowing it. Of course, it's your choice to follow the box office formula, and if you have a genius idea, it's a good idea to announce it with confidence, but knowing the box office formula when you're a rookie can be of great help. I would like to introduce the box office formula for webtoons that I know. Also, in the case of webtoons that are showcased, there will be readers who digest more than 20 episodes at a time. A brilliant production is important, but a production that allows readers to watch comfortably and immersively for a long time is more important. Since it is a part that requires a lot of experience, I shared my know-how on how to arrange and direct cuts.
Q Who was the artist's mentor?
A What I really wanted to have was a mentor, Me too.
Q What is the last thing you would like to say to the students?
A When I was a rookie, it was too difficult for me to complete a manuscript, and I also had trouble living. Even now, there are moments when I want to put off work because I want to roll and have a glass of beer. Nevertheless, if you have the ability to draw, it seems like a cartoonist's mission is to write manuscripts. This time around, I'd like to meet you through a camera lens rather than a manuscript. I hope I can be a good mentor to all of you who dream of being a writer.
